Start your sailing odyssey with this 2 day ASA course for beginners.
Through the ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing course you will learn how to become a competent skipper in a fun and safe environment. After successfully completing this course you will be certified to skipper a keelboat with a length of up to 27 feet in length by day in light moderate winds (up to 15 knots) and sea condition.
Knowledge of basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim etc.
You do not need any prior experience to do this course . The only prerequisite is reading course handbook from ASA store, (you get more out of the practical sailing days, by doing this). The ASA Basic Keelboat Sailing course is the first step to becoming competent and confident on a sailing yacht. The course is designed to quickly progress novices as it is very practical and will let you experience all basic aspects of sailing.
Our professional ASA certified instructors are patient and have a lot of experience, they will teach you ‘the ropes’ in a relaxed and friendly way. From the moment you step aboard you will be encouraged to play an active part on the boat together with the other students.
The ASA 101 is a practical and professionally run course, comprises of 2 full sailing days. You will be sailing during the day around the islands located close to Tortola. This course starts from $500 The course cost covers your ASA membership fee. You will need to order ASA 101 course book, directly from ASA website.
The instructor to student ratio will not be more than 1 to 5. We sail on our IC24.

Once you have completed this course syllabus and have achieved the required level of practical competence, you will take a written exam (and hopefully pass it). You will then receive the ASA certificate 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Standard. This means you are certified for the following:
- Skipper on a vessel up to a maximum length of 27 ft
- in coastal and inland waters
- in daylight hours and with light to moderate wind and sea conditions
This course is 2 days on a working boat - you always learn 'real life' sailing., with regards to weather, tides/currents and mechanics on your boat. Tour aim is to build competence, confidence and provide a strong foundation for further sailing trips.
What To Pack
Sailing means living in close quarters so please try to travel light. Please do not bring any hard, big suitcases with wheels that are difficult to store. A backpack or sports/duffel bag would be best.
Some recommendations on what to bring aboard:
Comfortable airy clothes (t-shirt & shorts advised. Long sleeves if you want to cover up from the sun when stood at the helm)
Deck or soft shoe
Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen/block
(And dollars - ATMs are not always reliable on the island)
